just for fun, i took one of those solar garden light circuit, soldered in some AAA NiCad’s and a two way switch to select “charge” or “run” mode, bent up some coat hanger, and threw everything on top of a vcr head. then i made a plane out of misc parts, and balanced everything.

yes, it runs by itself, but it takes a couple hours to charge up.

we took our solar powered boat that we built for a competition and stuck hydrofoils hoping to make it go even faster but they did not work too well. i think it is because of a combination of weight distribution, hydrofoil shape, and pitch of the foils.

i know it does not look solar powered but, there are 2 120w solar pannels that we decided not to put on for the testing. instead we just ran it off 36v of batteries. the motor has about 15hp peak and 5 continuous.
