Solar powered home / house – Tamboerskloof, Cape Town, South Africa
I visit the house we used to own in Tamboerskloof, Cape Town. I show the solar power installation and go through some of the challenges we faced.
* The solar array is 1.5 kW (1500 watts). Made up of 12 Mitshibishi 125 watt polycrystalline solar panels.
* The inverter is a 48 volt MLT Drives 4000 watt grid tie inverter – made in South Africa.
* The battery bank is made up of 16 x 6 volt Trojan 105 Ah batteries.
* The solar charger / controller is an Outback MPPT MX60
* The battery monitor is made by Xantrex
* Solar water heating / geyser evacuated tube collector
* A stunning / beautiful view of Cape Town city bowl, Table Mountain and Lion’s Head.

Solar-powered car fair
Santiago hosted the first ever solar-powered car fair ahead of the Atacama Solar Challenge.
Participant Gonzalo Pacheco saying: “Solar energy is an alternative. Obviously, the cost of the car is pretty high, but the niche is growing and there are investigations and everything so that in the future it can be used in a more efficient way.”
Minister of Energy and mining, Laurence Golborne saying: “Those who today participate in this fair, who today step up to this challenge, who– like the provost said– are learning today in the race to get a better vehicle, they are the people who will be the leaders that the country needs in development of renewable energy sources for the future.”

Get $5000 Tax Free Government Energy Grants for home renovations – Home Energy Retrofit Program.
Several provinces also provide rebates for the purchase or lease of fuel-efficient alternative energy vehicles. Ontario and British Columbia currently provide up to $2,000 dollars for individuals who purchase or lease vehicles powered by alternative fuels and hybrids, whereas Quebec, Manitoba and Prince Edward Island provide rebates of up to $1,000, $2,000 and $3,000 dollars respectively for the purchase or lease of hybrid electric vehicles only.
Ontario Home Energy Retrofit Program
Description: To help homeowners save energy, save money and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Ontario government has created the Ontario Home Energy Retrofit Program.The program provides homeowners with grants of up to $5,000 for home energy improvements.
Ontario reimburses the homeowner based on the measures undertaken and the rebate amount allowed for each component. Natural Resources Canada also provides reimbursement for the measures covered under its program.
The homeowner may also apply to programs offered by the Ontario Power Authority or their gas utility for other incentives that may be offered to further reduce the costs.
Ontario Home Energy rebates Ontario homeowners can get up to $5,000 in home improvement grants through the Ontario government’s Ontario’s Home Energy Savings program, which is in effect until March 31, 2011.
LiveSmart BC rebates BC homeowners are eligible for up to $5,000 and more in home energy grants through the BC government’s LiveSmart BC rebate program, which is in effect until March 31, 2011.
Home Energy Audits To qualify for Ontario Home Energy Savings grants, or LiveSmart BC rebates, homeowners must get a home energy audit before and after their home improvement work. Get up to $150 cash back on the cost of your first energy audit with a rebate from Ontario’s Home Energy Audit program. In British Columbia, the LiveSmart BC program also subsidizes the cost of your first home energy audit.

Surprisingly good short film about wind energy. What makes it valuable is the interviews with Marcellus Jacobs (a builder of wind turbines in the 1930s) and Ted Finch (whose efforts got the concept of net metering legally acceptable in the US).
