    so about how much energy does this system actually contribute to your hot water? does this take more than half the load off of the hot water heater?

    Could I use …
    Could I use something similar to this to heat a pool (5,000 gallons)? I realize it wouldn’t be able to drastically change the temperature, but getting in a pool that’s even a couple degrees warmer would be great.

    What about building …
    What about building a grid of black pvc pipes connected by elbows? Seems to me that you could get more length of pipe on your roof that way.
    How common are electric hot water heaters in Florida. At least for us in California, gas hot water heaters are very cheap to operate.

    Solar water heating …
    Solar water heating for pools has some market penetration primarily because of Cowboys making a sale and doing a minor install. The competition was/is only pool water heaters! Public companies like Envision Solar (evsi) take on the electric companies and help form the infrastructure for solar power for electric cars, businesses with parking. Residential is huge and until we are closer to grid parity making a solar investment is for personal use the rich and the GREEN.

    @duckunter looks …
    @duckunter looks for hoses labeled “potable water” or “drinking water” they’re everywhere now

  • ClefDeDavid88 says:

    Have you thought of …
    Have you thought of separating them a little more for more light exposure? Also maybe putting them in a mirror box would give them that much more light exposure.

    Also, I was thinking you could kill two birds with one stone by rigging your dryer vent back through to inside your home (using filtration of course) and ALSO putting part of the hose through this so there is that much more help to heat the water before it goes into the heater tank.

    Umm, that car port roof is not very stable, it was shaking when you put the empty tubing on it. :(

  • duckunter says:

    One thing to be …
    One thing to be aware of is the potential for chemicals in the pipe to be transferred to the water while it is being heated. Do not drink this water.

    BTW the term sunny …
    BTW the term sunny Florida is just a psychological disposition, not a scientific fact, in the entire east coast it is more or less hazy-sometimes painfully so, especially bigger cities, unless it has just rained within the past couple hours. The western deserts, that’s where sunny blue skies really are, I’ve lived in both areas.

    Also do be sure to check with the supplier that the black poly pipe is potable (safe for drinking) type, usually listed by the NSF. Usually more expensive, but safe to use. I have our water heater turned way down to 105-110. Ok for showers, not the best for dishwasher, also we never use hot or warm water for washing clothes.

    @shirteesdotnet
    No, just cover the black poly pipe like a blanket with clear sheet plastic. This is more necesarry in colder weather, so I would try it uncovered first since it’s summer in S Cal. You can always upgrade later, use 4-6 mil the clearer the better.

    @IronHorsez88 Hey thanks! So I could run clear food grade tubing? It doesnt need to be black?
