WHY DOES A SOLAR POWER SYSTEM COST SO MUCh?

I am shopping for a solar system and am tired of reading through the b/s. Everyone has the same spin of saving energy to get credit on the utility bill but the systems are 30-50k! with the rebates already applied. I smell huge mark up here. Does anyone have any tips on shopping for a solar system for a home?

There is a huge mark up. However, if you do the math in the end you wind up winning. It is this way because the market is still in it’s infancy. It was a huge thing a while ago but lost momentum. It is coming back now, improved and costly. Till more people invest in it and prove it’s worth by driving the cost of PG&E back where it belongs and take control of their environment it will remain costly.

For shopping for a system. All you can do is keep looking till you find what you want at the price you want to pay. The internet is your best tool for that search.
Good luck. Thanks for thinking of the environment.

The Challenges of Solar Forecasting: Reducing the Cost of Solar Power Through Research

Carlos Coimbra [UC Merced]
Abstract:

The Solar Forecasting Laboratory at the University of California Merced has collected over 15 months of high quality horizontal and direct normal irradiance measurements at different wavelengths (UV, IR and visible) with the primary objective of developing, calibrating and benchmarking novel and more accurate forecasting models for solar irradiance at the ground level. Without effective forecasting methodologies, neither solar nor wind power plants cannot be effectively connected to the power grid, which presents a major obstacle for high-penetration utilization of intermittent sources. We will discuss different strategies for solar forecasting for both short- and long-term, high spatial and temporal resolution, and forecasting for different solar applications. We will also present a hybrid (GA/ANN) SSL (Stochastic, Self-Learning) methodology that yields very promising results for modeling and forecasting the solar resource, as well as some recent results of the application of our forecasting methodology to model the power output of UC Merceds 1 MW solar farm (SunPower 1-axis TPV).

$1 portable, collapsible solar hot water collector

Making hot water using unmodified trash bags (which were later used for their intended purpose). You can’t beat the ROI on these DIY solar collectors. In cold, cloudy or windy climates, an additional layer of plastic can be put over the top to hold the heat in like a greenhouse. Some day I will replace these with an inclined box and a toilet valve filler, complete with shower head.
