Syr Darya River Aral Sea

This is the Syr Darya river where it flows into the North Aral sea. This structure appears to be used to stop the flow of water or reduce it as needed. The water is replenishing the once shrinking North Aral by means of a 30km world bank funded dam.

Solar Impulse Prototype First Flight

Solar Impulse video showing the short first flight of its prototype solar-powered aircraft, HB-SIA, on Dec. 3. Weighing 1,600kg, and with a wing span of 63.4m, the aircraft flew 350m down the runway at Duebendorf, Switzerland, reaching an altitude of just 1m. The first flight was made on battery power. The aircraft’s 11,600-plus solar cells will be connected for full flight tests, to begin early in 2010 at Payerne, Switzerland. The solar cells will recharge the batteries in flight, allowing the aircraft to fly through the night. A 36-hour test flight is planned for mid-2010. The tests will validate the design of a follow-on aircraft, HB-SIB, with which the Solar Impulse team plans to attempt a round-the-world flight in 2012.

What are some positives and negatives about solar power/energy?

not homework just wanting to know.

The positives are: free after initial cost so there will be a payback. It’s slow but better efficiency is coming a long. Payback for an average Solar thermal system (heats water) is relatively quick. About 6-10 years. Consider the system will last 20+ that’s a pretty good return on investment. No pollution involved.

Cons: People who are going solar are not looking at cost in dollars. They are looking at the cost of doing what we’re doing to the environment.
They want to leave a smaller footprint. What is the cost in the long haul if we continue to pollute the earth? Will we have enough money to turn it around in 10, 20, or 30 years?

A good start is a solar hot water system. With the current tax credits it just makes sense. Everyone talks about solar electricity being too expensive and that is true but not solar thermal. It’s the biggest bang for your buck!

Where can I learn all about green living like rural off the grid ect?

I saw a show of some people living off the land with solar energy, bio diesel, farms, earth made walls, vegetable oil and hydrogen cars, ect.

I would like to see a site or a book or a community that would teach me so I can have thorough knowledge and learn all the ins and outs and learn what works and what doesnt ect and break from a lot of spoiled ways and other things that I am not even aware of.
